‘No, you will not embarrass me by wearing that rubbish outfit. Come to my room, I will get you something to wear’ said Aunty Tokunboh. She could not believe that this her Aduke had risen so fast in the society to such an extent that she had an exclusive invitation to the Owen-Browne Party.


This party that many society ladies had hoped to be invited for. How Aduke did it was not her concern. The only thing she knew was that Addy would not put the family to shame by appearing like a waif.
‘Who is doing your face?’ she asked as she went through her closet, trying to select an outfit for Aduke.
‘Am I getting married? why should someone come and do my make up for another person’s party? asked Addy who suspected that Aunty Toks, was getting ahead of herself
‘Ahhh, let me call Bimpe, she’s the best around. I hope she has sometime today. I doubt it though because everyone would be calling her now’ said Aunty Toks who rushed in to call the make up artist.
‘She can’t come, but she would send her girl over. Oya go and have your bath now. I want you to make the tail end of the church ceremony.

Only those who are really close to the family attend the church event. When Ovation publishes the pictures, people will see you there, sitting by your friend’ said her aunt, who obviously had big plans of Addy being a society lady.

‘Okay aunty’ said Addy who wondered what the fuss was about. She was also surprised to see this new change in her aunty. If she did not know better she would say ever since her aunty saw her with Gabbo, a new found respect had developed.


By the time Aduke was dressed and made up, even she felt like a princess. Aduke was even more surprised when her aunt lent her the accessories to go with the outfit. The Chanel purse and the matching gold Loubs made her feel like one of the really rich kids.

‘Mummy, come out!!!’ yelled Tessy ‘I will leave you behind o!’ she said, toying with the keys of the Range Rover sport she had rented for the day.
‘Okay, let’s go’ said Tessy’s mum, who came out looking stunning. ‘I don’t think we would meet the church event, let’s head for the reception’ she suggested.

‘No, we would go to the church first, even if it is to meet them taking the pictures, we must appear in those pictures too’ responded Tessy as they left for the church.
