“Can I ask you a question?’ Aduke asked Gabbo.



He had been so cold to her since the police incident. She wondered if he had been disappointed in her for responding to Peter or if it was something else that irked him.

Gabbo looked up from his newspaper, one brow raised in askance, telling her silently to continue if she wished.
‘Why are you being so cold to me? Why won’t you talk to me?’ she asked
‘You should be able to answer that yourself Aduke’ he answered in a detached manner
‘If I knew, I would not be asking’ she responded honestly
‘Well, think about it. Aduke. You are smart enough to know the answers.
‘Please DG , tell me what is going on.’ She begged
‘I’ve just been thinking to myself. At almost 50, should I really be struggling with a young man over a girl? You need to be here with me in your heart, soul and body if you decide that you really want to be here. From what I have seen so far, I am very unsure of your position. It seems that I have been a rebound man for so long that you have not even made any efforts. You have fallen from coincidence to coincidence and you expect me to continue like this? I’m sorry my darling, but no matter the feelings I have for you, I am unwilling to continue things like this. However, you need to answer just one question Aduke, who is it that you really want to be with? Is it Peter or myself?

Aduke looked at Gabbo and hesitated. This was a hesitation that was too long.

Yet, there was so much he did not understand, so much she wanted to say. How would she start?

It seemed that this hesitation, not longer than a millisecond, was going to change things. It made Danladi Gabbo wonder. Was Aduke truly his or had she always belonged to Peter?
