Gabbo walked into the living area with a huge smile on his face, relieved and excited at the same time.
‘Addy! Where are you? Your result is out! You, my baby girl are in for a night of bliss’ said Gabbo as he chuckled, barrelling out of the study.

He had been holed up there trying to do some work when the lab results with the great news had come via email. He was really happy and sure that his Addy would be too. He was surprised to realise that he had been a bit tense about the outcome of these results. It would have been really awkward if things had not gone well.
He stopped in front of her and presented the print out to her. He was surprised that she only glanced at it cursorily with little interest and no excitement. Gabbo cocked his head to the side and wondered why Aduke was not over the moon, rejoicing like him.
‘Addy, didn’t you read it. Did you not hear what I said? I said your blood work came back fine!’ he repeated.
‘Oh, okay’ she responded in a lacklustre manner, unconcerned and unimpressed.

She had been peeved because he had left her all alone to her own devices while he had gone to work in the study. She had been irritated at herself because she had noticed his absence and had spent several hours smiling as she remembered their earlier encounters and fights.

She was surprised that she missed him even though they were only a few feet apart and it had only been self-respect that had kept her from going to his study to beg for some attention like a well-trained puppy. She had been contemplating why she was so addicted to him when he had come into the room, expecting her to jump for joy at his news.

‘What is it, Addy? Are you not excited?’ he asked
‘Wait, Gabbo. Did you imagine the results would have gone any other way? She asked, sounding harsher than she had intended.
‘Well’ he said ‘No, but, you know how these things can be. Anyway, I am glad that you are squeaky clean!’ he answered seriously.

‘My baby, you are in for an amazing evening today’ he said, breaking into a smile. The excitement was back in his voice, his eyes were dancing.
‘How do you know that? She asked, unwilling to be dragged into his celebratory mood.
‘Know that you will have a good night? Simple baby. I hate to brag, but Gabbo does not make promises he cannot deliver on. So if I say you are going to have a great night, you better believe it’ he said with a cheeky smile.
‘Well, clear your mind of all fantasies, Mister. It is unlikely that anything would happen tonight’ she said straight-faced.

‘Err, I don’t understand’ he said, brought back to earth by her reaction.
‘You’ve seen my results DG, but have I seen yours?’ she asked ‘I too would like to see your results. I would prefer that you are tested in my presence and that your test results are emailed to me, just like you did with mine’ she said disagreeably, with a frown on her face.
‘Are you kidding?’ he asked, disbelieving, for she was the first woman who had ever asked him to do such.

‘I’m not a common commodity, Aduke’ he said, with serious eyes. He was irritated that she was doing this, putting stumbling blocks up for no apparent reasons; yet, a part of him was impressed, for he loved the fact that she could challenge him. He would never have expected this from one so young.

‘Neither am I Gabbo, yet you saw fit to ask me to submit myself for tests. I feel the need to do so with you too. After all, I would not want to be infected by you would I?’ asked Addy, glad to have an opportunity to get her point across.
Gabbo’s face was set, poised to resist. How dare she? He wondered if he looked like someone who had a disease.
‘Are you serious, Addy?’ he asked again
‘Yes’ she responded simply ‘If I could go through it for you, regardless of how I felt about it, it is only fair that you should do this for me too’ she responded.

‘Is this why you were upset just now?’ he asked, sorry that he had been selfish and that he had not really considered how she felt about it.
‘No. I just wasn’t happy that you had left me by myself. I wasn’t happy that I was missing you. I should be able to cope without you’ she said.

‘Wow!’ he said. He had not expected her to say this, right after a mini disagreement. She knew how to get him every time; she knew how to melt his irritation away.

‘Thinking of it now, it is only fair that I also run a test. I’m sorry you felt funny about it. I do hope you realise that it was not my intention to make you feel awkward’ he said. It was the closest to an apology that he could give.

‘I know’ responded Addy ruefully. She had also not meant to sound so harsh.
‘I will call the attendant now and we will put this matter to rest’ said Gabbo.

As he walked into his home office to place the call, he realised that he had a new found respect for this young lady who knew how to assert herself with him. He released that only a few women would ever hold up in comparison to her.

Aduke watched him as he went in and smiled. Her Danladi was a good, fair man. She almost called him back to cancel the tests, so she decided to take a walk in the garden instead so that she would not yield to the impulse. She knew she must maintain that she is her own woman with this man.

As Addy stepped into the garden, her phone began to vibrate in her pocket. Message upon message began to flood in, all from her Theresa Obum friend.

‘***Addy, where are you***
***Addy, call me as soon as you get this***
***Addy, where the Fork are you? Simisola has been KIDNAPPED!***
***I swear, it’s not a joke***’

Aduke immediately dialled Tessy’s number to find out what had happened.

‘Tessy, what’s up? What happened? Were you just lying in your text or are you serious? Was Simi really kidnapped?’ she asked in a rush
‘What? How?’ surprised by the responses Tessy was giving her.
‘In this LasGidi? Does this even happen? Do people get kidnapped? I wonder whose sick idea of a joke this is’ she said as Tessy supplied her with more information
‘That is a big mistake. Peter can never be a suspect. NEVER EVER! ’ yelled Aduke into her phone
‘It is impossible. I can stake my life on it!’ said Aduke vehemently
‘I will be home soon’ she said, terminating the call as she ran into the house.
‘DG, there is some news about Peter!’ she yelled, looking for him around the house
‘What happened Addy?’ he asked, fearing the worst
‘Simisola has been kidnapped and Peter has been fingered as the prime suspect!’ she said
‘Calm down and tell me everything’ he ordered
Aduke regained her breath and relayed all the information Tessy had just provided.

‘This Simisola is Owen-Browne’s daughter?’ he asked trying to understand the connection.
‘Yes’ she responded
‘Is Peter friends with her? Is he close to her?’ still trying to understand Peter’s connection
‘No. Not at all’ responded Aduke
‘Addy, it makes no sense. Someone is trying frame Peter or use him as a shield. This person might be involved in the kidnap’ said Gabbo
‘You think so?’ asked Aduke
‘Aduke. I know we are not sure of where he is at the moment, but first, and although I hate to remind you of this, Peter was thoroughly beaten up and so a kidnapping heist would not be on his mind this close to his injuries. Secondly, I know the boy quite well. He is a reliable sort who would never do this. What would the motive be? He has more of a reason to kidnap you than she, my dear. We must get to the bottom of this.’ Said Gabbo
‘I have to go to the flat’ she said.
‘I’m coming with you’, he said, just as the phone buzzed.

‘Yes, send him in’ said Gabbo into the phone
‘Addy, the guy for the test is here. It will only take five minutes’ he said to her.
It’s okay, but let’s rush, please’ said Aduke
