The Private Driver (The 8th Month)

It's 12 mid-night and everyone was still at the hospital trying to look after Dami who was rushed there after she fell off the staircase while running from the fake snake showed her by Mimi. Everyone was troubled that Dami was going to die. The doctors had done their best and had informed the family that Dami would live but she had lost the baby.

She was still unconscious, fighting for her life, but around 2 am, she moved one of her fingers. Kenny, who was sitting on her hospital bed noticed movements in other parts of her body and therefore started calling her name.

"Damil Dami! Damil Dami can you hear me? It's me, Kenny. Can you hear me? Please say something. All of us are worried about you. Please if you can hear me, say something to reassure us." Kenny said pleadingly. Mrs Temi and Mimi also rushed to the bedside to catch a glimpse of what was happening to Dami.

"So you knew about the plan?" Dami asked, opening her eyes for the first time since she became unconscious. She was looking directly at Kenny who was closer to her.

"What are you talking about Dami? What plan? Please, relax your body. If anything, we are all happy that you are alive and that you are now talking despite what happened earlier. Please trust me, there is no plan. No one has any plan against you. We are all here for you and to support you as you go through this." Kenny responded but Dami was not satisfied with the response he offered.

"I ask again, Kenny, you knew the plan set by my in-laws to destroy my life and you have been telling me lies that you love me? You knew all these while that my marriage was a total contraption? Don't lie to me because I already have my facts. You knew what my mother-in- law did? Can you look into my eyes and tell me that you were not aware?" Dami asked again, this time, managing to sit up on the bed and lean on the wall. She was now looking at Mrs Temi, Mimi and Kenny as they all watched her with their heads bowed shamefacedly.

"The three of you knew and you had this planned out. You wanted to trap me in a marriage that you knew won't work. Why did you people not tell me the truth from the beginning? Instead, you chose to keep me in the dark and ruin my life. The three of you should

police and make a report. Oh yes! I have lost my baby and I can use that as evidence that the three of you conspired to eliminate me in my husband's house. The police will believe me because I was pregnant with a baby. I remember Mimi threatening me with a fake snake and I remember how I fell. Dami said, she was shedding tears, but her voice was still very forceful and commanding.

"I will talk ma! Please don't report me to the police. I don't want to go to jail. I'm still very young and I'm not married yet. I want to get married and have my own children. Please don't report me to the police, I will tell you the whole truth and nothing will be left out." Mimi said to Dami who by then had grabbed her phone threatening to phone the police and report what happened to her.

"You better shut your mouth! You are just a housemaid. You are not a member of our family and you have no rights to talk about our family issues. Now, leave this place at once before I personally kick you out." Mrs Temi said threateningly. She pointed towards the door,

ordering Mimi to vamoose, but the housemaid paid her no attention. She stayed put.

"No ma! With due respect, I will not leave. I know that you are the one who employed me and you are also paying my salary but this matter concerns me and I would like to say the truth and to set myself free. Like I said earlier, please, Madam Dami, I will tell you the truth." Mimi responded to Mrs Temi who was seething with anger. Her old face looked squeezed as she continued to look at Mimi with 'corner corner' eyes.

"She is right. I will say the truth too. This has reached the level where none of us is safe if the police is called in." Kenny said, looking at Mrs Temi who appeared surprised.

"Kenny! You of all people! You are joining them too? I thought I trusted you before I hired you for this job? I never knew you would betray me at this critical juncture." Mrs Temi said with a strong sigh.

"What job? What job did she hire you do for her? Answer me Kenny! My mother-in-law just said she hired you to do a job for her. What job is she talking about? Did she hire you to eliminate me?" Dami questioned Kenny who was silent for a while before suddenly exploding with words.

"Ok! Ok! Ok! It's alright. I will talk. She hired me to get you pregnant. Her son's system lacks network. The man you call your husband is not really a man. There is something wrong with his network system. He lacks network and he is unable to browse any woman's website. That's the truth. So basically, your marriage to him was planned. His mother here just wanted grandchildren named after Ojo. That's all."

Kenny said loudly, trying desperately to avoid looking at Dami in the eyes. Dami herself was so shocked that she used her hands to cover her face.

"What Kenny said is true. We were all involved in the plan. I was hired to keep you in check, to make sure you never find out the truth. I was hired to give you all the comfort you want at home and make you forget the fact that your husband was not available to browse your website. I was told to monitor your phone calls and to eavesdrop anytime you are talking on the phone. I'm sorry that I used the fake snake to scare you. I was only trying to prevent you from asking Ojo questions about his health status because I knew you were going to ask." Mimi said. Mrs Temi was so angry that she walked out of the hospital stone-faced.

At that time, Dami was crying profusely and could not even look at anyone of them. She picked up her phone and called her husband.

"Hello honey! Good morning. I have given birth to our baby. Please can you rush back to Nigeria and see him? promise, I will allow you to go back to London immediately. I just want you to see his handsome face. The baby looks like you. Please can you do this for me?" Dami asked Ojo over the phone.

"My goodness! So I'm now a father? I'm boarding the next available flight to Nigeria this morning. Congratulations to us my love! I'm so happy." Ojo said as they both hung up. He did not know that Dami was telling him lies because no one had told him that she lost the baby.

The 9th Month is the last part.
