The Private Driver (The 7th Month)

It is the 7th month of Dami's pregnancy and the baby bump is fully visible. It was impossible to hide it. Dami's neighbours who are aware that her husband lives abroad were beginning to whisper. Gossips were flying around the vicinity with many people trying to suggest that the pregnancy actually belongs to Kenny the private driver and not Ojo. They know that Ojo lives in London and there was no way he would have planted a seed in his wife's womb in Benin City.

The only thing is that those gossiping about Dami were not sure of what they were saying, so they made sure to keep the 'cho cho chơ' in hushed tones so that she will not hear it from anybody's mouth. However, she actually has heard it. One evening, she was coming out from the gate to buy malt at a nearby shop and she heard two young ladies talking and pointing at her.

"I heard that the pregnancy does not belong to her husband. I heard it was all planned by her mother-in-law. They say her husband's system is not bringing network, so her mother-in-law used the private driver to get a grandchild. Someone told me that the pregnant woman does not know what is going on." One of the gossipers said, while looking left and right to make sure Dami was not watching.

"I heard it too. Someone told me that the marriage will soon scatter." The other gossiper responded.

"Of course the marriage will scatter. When the pregnant woman finds out what is going on, she will pack her load and leave. Even if it is me, I will leave." The first gossiper continued.

"Tufiakwa! What her mother-in-law did is not good. But who am I to talk? Let me keep my mouth shut. It is as if she is watching us. I don't want to enter trouble." The other gossiper said. Actually, Dami heard everything they said, though they were speaking in hush tones. She was silent. She did not confront them because she was too ashamed to do so. Dami kind of felt that what the two gossipers said was true.

Words are like seeds. Once planted, they begin to germinate and one day, it would bear fruits. This is exactly what was happening to Dami. When she came back into the building, she was terribly sad because of all she heard from the two ladies. She wondered how the shameful story leaked to outsiders. Dami wondered if what they used to say that walls have ears is true, because apart from family members, no one else knew what was going on in the compound.

"How did I find myself in this mess? And how am I going to come out of it? This is not good for my reputation. I have to find a way out." Dami said to herself while relaxing in the living room. She was using a straw to sip the cold malt.

"I'm going to call my husband and question him. He will have to tell the truth. Ojo must tell me the truth. I'm no longer ready to bear this shame. How can I get pregnant for another man and my husband will accept it wholeheartedly. Something is not right. Something must be wrong somewhere and I will find out. And if I end up finding out that his system cannot bring network, that would be the end of this marriage. I will make sure I will not spend even another night in this compound if it turns out that he lied to me about his health status." Dami was still talking to herself. She called Mimi, the housemaid to bring her phone which she left in her bedroom.

"Thank you." Dami said when she collected the phone from Mimi.

"Are you alright ma? You are not looking happy. Is anything the problem? Do you want me to bring your food? I have made Egusi soup and I'm sure you will like it." Mimi said excitedly. She had eavesdropped and heard all Dami was saying, even though she spoke in low tones.

"No Mimi, I don't want to eat. I just want to call my husband and ask him some questions about a private issue that is troubling my mind. Thanks anyway, I will eat the Egusi soup later in the night." Dami tells the housemaid with a brief smile. Mimi looked at her with a studied eyes and concluded that she had to intervene to stop the phone call from happening.

"I won't allow her to make the call. This call is capable of scattering this family and I will lose my job. From the look of things, it appears Dami is about to find out the truth about her pregnancy. I will try to stop her." Mimi said as she went back into her room and brought out a rubber snake. The snake looks very real as she grabbed it with her hand. She took it into the living room where Dami was sitting and carefully dropped it beside her.

"Madam see snake! See snake! Please run!" Mimi shouted with a loud voice to alert Dami. Dami jumped up and threw her phone on the floor and it got damaged. She ran towards the stairs to climb downstairs but she fell dangerously and passed out.

"Oh my God! What have I done? Madam please stand up! Please stand up! I was only doing the job I was employed to do. I was instructed not to allow you to find out the truth about your pregnancy. I know that if you called your husband to question him, you will find out the truth. I know everything that is going on. And I know that the thing is disturbing you. Please stand up and I will tell you everything thing I know. I will tell you why your husband and mother-in-law are happy despite knowing that the baby is not theirs. Please wake up and I will tell you the truth about Kenny. Please, don't die, I don't want to go to jail." Mimi said pitifully as she kept on pushing Dami, but there was no sign that the pregnant woman could stand up.

"What happened to her?" Mrs Temi, Dami's mother-in-law asked as she rushed into the room.

"What is going on? Oh my God, she is bleeding.

Kenny said when he entered the room.

"She fell down while running from a snake." The housemaid, Mimi said with profuse tears in her eyes.

"Snake? Where did it come from?" Mrs Temi asked.

"I brought the snake." Mimi said.

"Why? Why would you bring a snake into the house?" Kenny asked.

"It is not a real snake. I was only doing the job you people asked me to do. You said I should always stop her from making suspicious phone calls that would reveal the truth. I was just using the snake to scare her." Mimi responded sadly.

"You have created a big problem for us." Mrs Temi said, shaking her head sorrowfully.

"Please, enough of the talks, let us rush her to the husband." Kenny intervened as they all lifted Dami and took her to the car and drove off to the clinic.
