Must Read: The Rich Kids Of Lagos (16+)

Good morning sir’ said Tessy as she stepped into Simi’s father’s house. She was surprised to find him looking so relaxed, reading one of the national dailies. His young wife was cuddled by his side, rubbing his huge tummy. This wasn’t the scene Tessy had expected to see. She wondered if he wasn’t the same person she had spoken to just a few minutes ago. What kind of parent was this man?
‘Tessy, how are you? So, has she made up her mind to be found? asked Simisola’s father
‘She has not called me sir’ responded Tessy, confused at the question.
‘Sugar, my mind tells me this is one of her tricks o. Even this Tessy might be in on it’ said Sweety Potato in her fake British accent, looking at Tessy with venomous eyes.

Suddenly, Tessy remembered the reasons why Simisola disliked her step mother so much. In addition to having stylishly snatched Simi’s Dad from her mother, it was obvious that she had an incredibly strong hold on him.

Tessy knew Simisola very well and she was certain there was no way she could have pulled off this heist all by herself. Simi always needed people to do things with and for her, she could not even drink a glass of water by herself without asking for assistance. Tessy’s gut instincts told her this could be a little more serious than Simi’s dad realised.

‘Sir, have you contacted any of the security agencies?’ asked Tessy
‘No, my dear.’ he responded ‘Even if this was a real kidnap, I would not go to the national security agencies. They can mess things up for me’ he replied, deep in thought, suddenly sounding like the worried father she had heard earlier over the phone
‘Tessy are you sure Simisola has not set this up as an avenue to seek for attention? He asked ‘You know how much she likes to be the centre of everyone’s attention’ he added
Sweety Potato interjected ‘But you know your daughter now, Sugar. I don’t think you should allow her make a fool of you again. This one would be a public scandal if you cry foul when there is nothing wrong. Anyway, even the police advise that one should wait until a person has been missing for 24 to 48 hours’ she said.
‘Sir, Simi can never pull this off by herself. If you permit me to, I can call our other flatmates to find out if they have heard anything about this’ said Tessy
‘Go ahead.’ he said as Tessy quickly began to dial first Anita and then Aduke’s numbers, neither of which went through. She tried a few more times before she gave up.

‘Okay, don’t worry Tessy. I think I will call the head of my security department to take some action. Unfortunately he is on leave at this time. I would probably have to recall him. Perhaps if they can try to trace her car, it would be a starting point. But God knows, if this young girl thinks this is a joke, I will disinherit her because I cannot put these things past her’ he said
‘Okay sir’. Responded Tessy as she made up her mind to call Simi’s mother, who had relocated to the UK to take care of her first son. It had been very acrimonious separation and the exes barely spoke to each other.

Sweety Potato had been the first daughter of one of Simi’s Mother’s friends and unfortunately, those who had envied the senior Mrs Owen Browne’s role as queen bee of LasGidi circles had been very happy to witness her humiliating downfall at the hands of a young girl only old enough to be her own daughter.

‘Ok sir, Let me leave now’ said Tessy as she started to turn around.

‘Hmmn, you came here with the name of a suspect in mind. Who is it?’ asked Simi’s dad again. It seemed the Chief was not totally sure that this kidnap had been planned by his daughter as his young wife wanted him to believe.

‘Yes sir, I had someone in mind sir. His name is Peter Owhoko but right now, I’m no longer sure’ said Tessy as she looked pointedly at Sweety Potato who was Tessy’s number one suspect now. Perhaps she had done this to teach Simisola a lesson. Tessy made up her mind to share these thoughts with Simi’s mother.

‘I have not heard of that name before. Why do you think he has a connection with this?’ asked Simi’s Dad who had scribbled the name down as Sweety got up and left his side, grumbling under her breath.

‘Because the three of us had a plan which neither saw through and then, they both got missing on the same day’ said Tessy. She was sure that the two of them had cut her out of a deal, but, she would truncate their plans here and now.

‘Is she in a relationship with him, could they have eloped?’ he asked, hoping this was the case. It would make his life so much easier.
‘I don’t think so sir’ she answered.
‘Okay Tessy, please leave your line open.

Perhaps I should be more serious with this issue; after all, she is my daughter. Rather than call my security department, perhaps I shall have to call one of my top secret PI’s. He used to be with the Secret Service and still has his contacts there’ he said, speaking to himself as he picked his phone up to dial a number.
‘Okay sir. Let me leave now. I need to stay at home in case anything comes up’ she said as she began to leave the room. She was ignored for the Chief was already on the phone.

‘Hello, is that Pius Ambali? Yes. This is Chief Owen-Browne, I have an issue, please let ,me give you a quick run-down of the facts as they are right now….’

Tessy was happy because she knew the issue was being resolved now.

Anita entered the flat with her keys and walked straight into the bedroom where Wale sat at his desk in deep contemplation, trying to write. Anita was surprised to find him in such a serious mood for she had not seen him like this in a very long time.
‘Hey Wale.’ She greeted slowly, testing his mood.
‘Shhhh…I’m trying to concentrate as you can see, I’m writing’ he responded. So, Anita sat quietly, holding off on the many questions on her lips, waiting to be asked, she needed to know how much would accrue to her in this deal, she also needed to be sure that the boys were not being too hard on Simisola. She still wanted to have Simi on her speed dial so that she could use Simi’s connections in future. This was just business. Most importantly, she knew she needed to break free of this stupid, lying and cheating druggie. However, she knew she had to take it slowly.

After waiting for about twenty minutes, she began to lose her patience. In all the time she had been here, the idiot had not done anything, he had not even typed a single word on the computer which had since gone into sleep mode.
‘Wale’ she tried again
‘Shhhh…. it’s coming’ he said. Simi looked around the room, trying to understand what he was saying. What exactly was coming. It had been some time now since she had been waiting for the buffoon to say something about the ongoing deal, but he was mute, acting the fool as usual. She could not take it anymore and so she started to talk again.
‘Look here Wale, I’m not here for your usual drama’ she began
‘But i told you to shoosh!’ he yelled
‘We need to discuss the terms of this deal. How much are we asking for and how much is my cut?’ she continued as though she had not heard him
‘What deal? Who has been in a deal with you?’ he asked her with blank eyes. If she didn’t know any better, she would have been worried that this was not the same person she had planned with earlier this morning. After taking a moment to reflect, Anita realise that it was an act, aimed at deflecting her from her purpose here and she decided she was having none of that.

‘Wale. Stop your foolishness right now! I delivered someone to you can you please let me know what my share of the ransom is? I’m asking nicely now’ she said
‘Or else what?’ he asked menacingly, standing up to confront her
‘Or else, I would go to the authorities and spill my guts to them. How much is my share?’ said Anita who was ready for him, standing chest to chest with him. She had her cards la!d out properly. Her younger brother was to get in touch with the police if he didn’t hear from her by this evening.

Wale burst out laughing manically. ‘There is nothing you can do to me Anita. You do not know where she is and neither is there any way you can connect her to me. You can leave now, fool. he said
Anita was pained to her marrow. She could not believe this idiot had used her. She was so angry that she struck at him and dealt him a very hot slap on his face. ‘Bastard, you have crossed the wrong woman!’ she said
Wale held on to his face, visibly angry. ‘You slapped me?’ he asked. ‘Yes, I did.’ responded Anita. No sooner had the words left her mouth that Wale dealt blow upon blow upon blow on her. He beat her to a pulp and began to tie her up.
‘Look at you. Little fool. Do you think you can match my mental powers? You have been used and dumped. Your part in this assignment is over. You have delivered Simisola to me. I’m on to the next thing and you are no part of it’ he said to Anita’s limp body. She looked at him unable to move, one eye shut by the punches dealt to her face.

Anita was sorry her path had ever crossed with that of the mad writer, Wale, who immediately left her tied up and went back to his desk, contemplating the next chapter to write.
