Simi had not spoken much since she got back home. Her life had changed, but nobody around her seemed to acknowledge this. She had lived in captivity and seen a man die. A man who had only been trying to help his younger sister live. She knew that nobody would understand how she felt.

She had even tried to explain it to her mother who waved it off and said the wages of sin is death and that Ogadi had received an early judgement. Her mother tried to link this to Sweety Potato, certain that the God who dealt Ogadi this hand would soon strike Sweety Potato too.

Her eyes welled up in tears again as she remembered him, so, she decided to distract herself by catching up with the news online. It was not as if she could go anywhere without being scared anyway, so stepping out of the house was a big No-No. She was glad she now had personal security but it still did not make her feel safe.

Simi opened her iPad and automatically went to her go-to blog, Belinda Splinkeji, so she could catch up on the news. She was surprised to see her own pictures smiling back at her. These photos had been taken many months ago when she and her friends had gone clubbing, it was a very bad picture in which her hair was dishevelled, pupils dilated from too much alcohol, she had stuck her tongue out and had looked like one without a care in the world. Under the picture, was a small post:
‘’ Breaking News !!! Simisola Owen Browne is back home after long kidnap!!!

Daughter of one of the richest men in LasGidi, Simisola Owen Browne, has just survived the ordeal of a kidnapping attack. Simi was attacked one night as she returned home from clubbing with her friends who we hear escaped. We hear that the alcohol cleared immediately she realised what had happened and after she was dealt a few slaps and blows. We hear she is fine and would be flown abroad soon, but not before a thanksgiving ceremony is done at Our Saviour’s Church, followed by a reception at the Harbour Point Event Centre. The strictly by invitation reception party would be attended by the creme-de-la-creme of the society. I hear personalised IVs are exchanging hands already. Be rest assured, I will be the first to bring you the pictures from the sure-to-be glamorous event.”

Simisola wondered how this lady had been able to get the information all twisted up and somehow made her seem responsible for the kidnapping. Her eyes went down to the comments section and she was not surprised to see the same judgemental comments that followed. She began to read:

Simisola quickly turned off the iPad, upset that her private pain had been made public and turned to an accusatory backlash from people who did not know her. More so, she was upset that Belinda would have used this as a story to generate traffic for her site. How dare she? Simisola knew that if she cared enough, she could get Belinda locked up at Kirikiri Maximum, but she was not at that point yet, so she was not going to bother.

More importantly, she needed to clarify this reception thing that the blog has reported because nobody had deemed it fit to tell her.

She also needed to move back into her own apartment, it was not as though that was where she had been abducted anyway. As she picked up her phone to call her mother, her mother’s call came in.
‘Hello mum, I was just about to ring you’ said Simi
‘Simisola, how are you today?’ asked her mum
‘I’m fine. I need move back into my place, mum’ responded Simi who was quite tired
‘Tell your dad, I think you should be able to move back too. It’s not like you were picked up from yours anyway. It is his area that is unsafe!’ responded her mother.

‘Exactly! I have said this to him, but he doesn’t seem likely to budge. Will you also put a word in for me?’ asked Simi
‘I will see’ responded Simi’s mum, ever the politician. She knew she could use this as a bargaining chip with her daughter even though she only had a limited sphere of influence with her estranged husband‘
‘Where is he now?’ asked Simi’s mum
‘He said something about going to the police station, to answer false allegations or so..’ said Simi, who really did not know why her dad had to report at the station again.

‘Ha! Good. Anyway, that is not why I called you’ said Mrs Owen Browne
‘Why did you call mummy?’ asked Simisola
‘Do you know that Shalewa girl? The one that supplies the ghost party chairs that are in vogue right now?’ asked Mrs Owen Browne
‘I know Shally, what happened to her?’ asked Simi whose heart rate picked up. She hoped the Shally girl was okay.

‘My event organiser is saying that her chairs are out of stock for our dates and I think she’s lying. She probably wants me to use uglier chairs and a less quality set that would end up being more expensive for me and I’m not ready for that nonsense. Do you remember how Mrs Shonoiki broke and fell off a party chair at Mrs Caxton’s party? I could never ever let that happen at my party and I know Shalewa’s Party Supplies are top notch quality! I must have them, but, I think they are hoarding the chairs’ said Mrs Owen Browne without pausing for breath.
‘Mummy! So this party story is true?!’ asked Simi disbelievingly ‘Who does this, why should there be a party now?’ continued Simi who was irritated and angry at the same time.
‘Of course. God has saved my daughter from the snare of the fowler so, we are going to say thank you to Him. Do you know how many people have been killed while they were still in the hands of kidnappers? asked Mrs Owen Browne earnestly
‘Ok, so we go to church for that’ said Simi conceding, her mum had a point on that. She needed to get closer to Jesus anyway.
‘Then, we would have to host the church and the few guests to a reception’ said her mother ‘you know, a little birdie told me they are reserving those chairs for the Governor’s Wife’s Ball. I want them, Simi’ said her mother, one track minded as usual, after all, what mummy wants, mummy must get.
‘But mummy, I’m not in the mind frame for any party things’ responded Simi
‘Look, those black ghost chairs would work with my silver and black decor. We need it! Let’s do something, darling. You call Shalewa for my black ghost chairs while I call your Dad to allow you to move back to your flat. Will that work sweety?’ asked her mum sweetly.

Simisola knew she had been cornered. She had better get her mum those chairs, otherwise, she would be sentenced to living in this house forever. She had goosebumps just imagining having to see her daddy’s irritating second wife every damn day.
‘Okay mum, I will talk with Shalewa’ she said as she began to scroll for Shalewa’s number on her other phone. She hoped Shally could perform a miracle for her on this one.
