Aduke looked at her surroundings and wondered why Peter should be found at this Police Station.

She hoped he was not in trouble with the law.
‘Good afternoon Sir’ greeted Officer Ajala heartily.
‘How are you’ responded Gabbo, who obviously commanded respect. ‘I’m looking for a gentleman named Peter’ continued Gabbo who was irritated to be disturbed by Aduke who was tapping his arm.
‘Isn’t that Peter there?’ she said as she pointed at Peter who sat by Ambali alongside others at the far end, behind the counter. He had not seen Aduke yet, for it seemed that Peter had given up hope that anyone would come and get him. He was not looking out for anyone.
‘Ah good!’ said Gabbo. ‘I am here to see that young man’ he said pointing at Peter.
‘This Kidnapper?’ asked the Officer Ajala
‘He is not a kidnapper, Oga. He is my very good friend.’ said Aduke whose eyes pleaded with the Officer.
‘Okay, you people should wait. You see this girl here, she has been wanting to talk to me’ he said, pointing to a lady wearing a Cleaner’s Uniform.
‘Madam Tope, wetin? I don tell you not do dey disturb when we dey for counter!’ he said ‘Wetin happen now?’ he asked, impatiently
‘I see this letter for floor when I dey clean Oga Office. I no know whether make I throway am or whether make I leave am’ said the lady.

Officer Ajala collected the letter and perused the content before yelling to his colleague. ‘Johnson! come and read this letter oh, Today is our lucky day!’ He said as he shoved the letter into his colleague’s hand. This was the letter that Anita’s cousin had given the DPO to read, which had landed him in hot trouble.
‘This is strange’ said Officer Johnson. ‘This Owen Browne case is coming up again? The same day? So close to one another?’ This is interesting.’ said Officer Johnson who had already begun to fantasise about solving the mystery and securing a promotion for doing so.
‘Owen-Browne? Is this about Simisola’s kidnap?’ asked Addy innocently
‘Madam, how do you know about the kidnap? It is very classified! Who are you? Asked Officer Ajala
‘My name is Aduke. I’m Simisola’s flatmate and friend’ responded Addy, simply
‘Okay. It was you people and this Wale fellow over here that planned the kidnap ba? asked Officer aggressively.
‘Of course not!’ replied Aduke, incensed.
‘Who is Wale?’ Gabbo asked Aduke.
‘I really don’t know’ she responded, ‘Let us sort Peter out first’ she said as she faced Gabbo
‘Okay officer. You see those two men there’ pointing at Pius and Peter ‘ They do not deserve to be behind the counter. They are innocent of the kidnapping charges. We know them very well’ finished Gabbo.
‘You know them ba? And you, you are a friend to the lady that was kidnapped?’ asked Officer Johnson who faced Aduke. ‘Then please permit me to say all of you are suspects. In fact you are all in a ring of kidnappers!’ stated Officer Johnson, with grave eyes.
‘You cannot be serious’ said Gabbo ‘Do you not know who I am?’ he asked, as he called his lawyer on speed dial.
‘Oga, Madam, please join your friends over there. We would not like to use force to do this thing o. You look very respectable sir’ said Officer Ajala. It was such a thrill anytime they were able to catch these so called big men in a criminal case. They were very quick to become humble and to loose their snooty air once they were confined to a small space.

Gabbo quickly finished on the phone and faced Aduke ‘Baby, let’s do this. My lawyers will soon be here to clear this mess’ he said
As they got behind the counter, Gabbo walked over to Ambali and greeted him cordially whilst Peter refused to exchange pleasantries with Aduke and Gabbo. In fact, he left Gabbo’s outstretched hand hanging and turned to the other side, refusing to speak to any of the other three.

The four of them shared a bench, under the most unlikely circumstances, behind the counter of power drunk police officers. Peter wondered if help would ever come.

******************

Anita opened her eyes, for the first time in a long time and waited until her eyes became accustomed to the morning light streaming in.

She realised that she had been tied to Wale’s reading chair and apart from her throbbing head, all her body parts seemed to be attached. She did not find it strange that she was sitting in only her underwear. After all, Wale had once confessed that he preferred S£x with ladies who were too knocked out to know what was going on. She wondered where the bastard had gone to. she knew that she must act unconscious for some more time if she was ever to walk away from this alive.

As she heard a key in the door hole, she went back into position, and acted unconscious even though her heart was beating very fast. Would it be Wale or the Policemen whom she had written a letter to?
